Phew! just finally managed to get scene 1 done from the Animation job i'm doing currently with Harringey council. I'm still going to fine tune it a bit more...add couple more walk cycles and add a few more props in the background scenes.

In case you've all been wondering what i've been up to, well i haven't given up on animation at all but i have taken some time to develop my skills as an illustrator and study more on the principles and methodology of animation. I currently working on some projects for a distribution record label based in Soho called the Orchard, and here are a couple of album cover designs i worked on for them. They wanted something retro in that style of Austin powers.

This is the sequel to the thumbnailz...i applied myself more in this animation, as compared to the 1st episode of the thumbnailz, i noticed that in the initial thumbnailz project i did the movements were very minimal...and the characters came accross too stiff...so in this one i decided to act out the scenes to allow for more fluidity with the characters in question.

I haven't started cleaning up my final project, been taking a breather from everything, but i decided to finish up some of the other projects i was working on at Saint Martins, here is a concept i am currently working on called Thumbnailz. This idea came to me while there was a crit with the national gallery, and lo and behold my doodles for thumbs took on a life of their own.

For me to get my characters looking right and feeling right i had to do a fair bit of research using different media to achieve my aims. Since i wanted to create animal characters that would be very human i had to research more into the various animals in my animation. I checked the internet for a lot of my information such as Getty images, youtube and the TV.

I felt there was a lot of similarities between Kung Fu and Animation with regards to anthropomorphism. In animation there is the principle of attributing animal qualities to humans or inanimate objects, in Kung Fu it is believed to have been founded on the foundations of seven spirits Tiger, Crane, Snake, Hawk, Monkey, Dragon, and Phoenix. The animals i adapted this concept to were the Crane, Python (snake), Dragon, and the Lizard. Dixon Fung makes the following statement which reads as follows.

'As humans, we learn thru different means. We learn kung fu thru copying of movements from our sifu and seniors. We also learn thru mental processing and thru images of the philosophies, such as the concepts of the twelve bridges, five animals, elements etc. In the beginning, we imitate the shape of the animal or element to express the power and release the devastation we wish to cause on our opponents. An example is the usage of the tiger claw. We imagine our hand, and shape it like that of a tiger claw to lock, to destroy our opponents.'

The Crane is believed to possess a regal spirit, beauty and gracefullness and a symbol of immortality. To achieve this i introduced the idea that my Crane was female is also making her the means for the conception of the Dragon in my animation. In Kung Fu the fighting syle is based on 4 principles which is To hurt, To evade, To penetrate and and to Intercept, this is evident in how my crane relates to the python and the Lizard.

The Snake is considered as peaceful, calm and focused and it's action were very calculating and deliberate. When it strikes at an opponent it exploits it's opponents vulnerability. It is known for using limited effort and risks in attacking. In my animation i positioned my snake on tree, he is curled up waiting for the ideal moment before attacking.

The Dragon is arguably the most powerful element in Kung Fu, being a mystical creature. it's the sum total of all the elemental spirits. it's very unpredictable, and has a lot of internal strength. In my animation i wanted to show how upreditable the dragon was, he arrives as the child of the Crane, i deliberately made him a small dragon thereby playing on that element of upredictability. The dragon is also known as being highly flexible, i demonstrated this in my character by combining the elements together in him, as he comes out the egg we see him having the head, and limbs of the Lizard the body of the python and the wings of the Crane. This is runs parallel to the idea of combininig different fighting styles in Kung Fu.

The Lizard. is considered as a mythical water dragon in chinese folklore, he is known for his agility and sometimes nimbleness. My character shows this character traits in the way he attacks the crane. I also took some time in studying how Lizards move, their movement is not as smooth as the snake, theirs is very frantic and nervous. This was too my advantage i guess this would enable me to avoid doing a lot of inbetweens but stick with the main keyframes.

IS IT HUMAN OR ANIMAL

With regards to creating my characters because they were abviously animals, and the fact that martial arts was a discipline which involves applying animalistic movements, nuances and spirit to fighting. There was the dillemma of either given my characters human qualities or take the anthropomorphic route, i decided to apply both qualities to my characters which worked quite well.

On a human level the characters potray human characteristics, there is the greed of the lizard who wants to eat the egg and the opportunistic Python who is more calculating in his attempt to get the egg. The Crane is a lot more focussed he exemplifies strength and weakness at the same time.

The inspiration behind my final year project vary, ranging from western films,Kung fu films, cartoons and comics. Films such as the 'The Good, Bad and Ugly' Game of death, Fist of Fury, The 5 Deadly venoms, and animation such as Robot boy, Samurai Jack, Kung fu Panda, Jungle Book, Rescuers down under, Naruto, Cowboy Bebop and Comics such as X-Men, Spider man, Battle of the Planets

FILMS

GAME OF DEATH

The tall guy in this film is an American NBA Basketball player called Abdul Jabar, his movement reminds me a lot of my crane, there's some sort of regality and authority which contrast to Bruce Lee's nervous and almost desparate attempt to kill him. Bruce Lee does remind me of the Lizard.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND UGLY

The stand off scene between Clint Eastwood, Van Cleef and Eric Wallach in the hot scorching desert was what first came to my mind when i first saw the 'Crane,Python and Lizard' painting, i noticed that the snake and Lizard were on the offensive against the Crane who was holding a defensive position. There is some unity of purpose against the crane, the Lizard seems like the obvious anti-Hero (The Bad), the Snake(The Ugly) being the oportunist is curled up on a tree waiting for the best opportune moment to strike at the Crane(The Good)

ANIMATION

JUNGLE BOOK

Watching the stealthly movement of Kaa the snake in Jungle book reinforced the idea of keeping my snake on the tree and only allowing him neccessary movement when required, and also the element of comedy, in my animation i was able to show my snake fail clumsily in his attempt to steal the egg from the crane .

Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu Panda, i never saw the trailer to this movie eventhough i had heard a lot about this much anticipated kung fu animated fest, but on watching it, i noticed certain similarities between the look and feel of my characters and the characters in this film. They had various animals which represent the core spirits in Kung Fu, and they had the Panda that is an anomaly in this film, the panda is does not form part of the Kung Fu patheon. In my animation there is a parallel with my Lizard Character which is some sort of out of place character, the Lizard is not know to form the 5 main spirits of Kung Fu at best he is known as a sub-spirit in Kung Fu ancient traditions. In Kung Fu film '5 Deadly venoms' the Lizard plays more of pivotal role in the plot of the movie.

I also drew some inspiration from watching animated cartoons such as Robot boy and Genndy Tartakovsky's Samurai Jack, which seemed to explore the concept of the hero often encountering different odds and obstacles in his quest for redemption. Takashi Okazaki's Afro Samurai also proved a great influence which explores afro samurai's quest for being 'number One' .

During the term break i finally narrowed my choices of painting i was considering pitching to Lee Riley to 4 painting. having run through a couple of them with Steve.

Lee got back to me via email and told me some of the concepts had potential but lacked correlation to the paintings of choice. Not being too happy i decided to go back to the drawing board and i gave careful consideration to what Lee said. here is my initial draft of idea which i sent to the national gallery. it reads as follows.

My 1st pitch would be painting NG2980, with the title crane, python and Lizard, the title of this painting evoked a martial art setting with a cowboy western feel. The idea is centers to crane, python and Lizard which epitomise the elements of Kunfu, these characters have to battle it out pitting their skills and wits against one another, but at the end none seems to win as they reach a standoff, which would draw inspiration from the stand off scene in Clint Eastwood's 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' the good being the Crane, the bad being the python and the ugly being the Lizzard. The style would be manga

28th March

I was a bit frustrated at this point trying to piece together my ideas with the painting, the more i ran through ideas i felt drawn more towards the 'Snake, Python and Crane' painting. I was speaking to Adam one of my classmates in class regarding my project and as he was speaking i got inspired and my original idea took another twist and my new draft read as follows.

TITLE OF ANIMATION The Origin of the Dragon, Kungfu it is said that the spirits of different animals make up what is known as the Dragon.

STORY- The python and Lizard embark on a mission to capture the golden egg which is situated on the forbidden tree, which is guarded by the great crane. As they locate the golden egg, the python and lizard close in to their prey but as they draw nearer, the crane flies back and stops them from grabbing the golden egg, they all fight but the crane holds them back. At this point is where we have a stand-off, they start to hear noise which comes from the egg cracking, the xters are all suprised with the exception of the crane who is delighted, the egg cracks and the head of a baby snake pops out of the cracked egg, the snake is elated seeing this, the python and crane are shocked. The body emerges and it has the wings of the crane and the legs and arms, and hands of the Lizard. at this point the crane passes out, while the python and Lizard look at one another shocked.

MOTIVE- Capturing the Golden egg which holds the secrets to immortality

CONNECTION TO PAINTING The title of this painting was what jumped at me, it reminded me of an old Kungfu movie The action poise of all the characters explores an element of conflict, with the python and Lizard being on the attack and the Crane being on the defensive. This seems more like a face-off (reminds me of a cowboy stand off in the dersert) I also loved the setting in the painting which seems to be all set in the desert, it's only three xters, the outcome of this conflict could turn either way. I loved the use of flat pastel colours which are soft which contrasts to the harsh traditional mosaic feel of the painting. In the animation i intend giving the egg a mosaic design. i intend limiting my use of colours to the colours reflected in the painting.looking at painting i also noticed the python and lizard seem to have the same soft pastel green, which explores their harmony and the line of action for the python and lizard seems to be very similar as they are directing their attack in the same direction of the Crane. This is why i am giving the Python and Lizard the joint purpose.

Finally breathing a sigh of relief i had to work on a sketches on my characters which would live in a storyboard landscape.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT

Friday the 29th FEB

We all went to the National Gallery to have an intitial briefing on our final year project. we were briefedby Lee Riley on the requirements and the paintings available for use with regards to our final year project. we were given a slide showreel of some of the 2,300 paintings available on the gallery's database. we were also allowed some time to browse the gallery to anything that caught5 our fancy. Although it was stressed to us that we weren't under any pressure to choose a painting right away, i knew i could breath a sigh of relief because i could afford to take my time in making my decisions regarding any painting. At this stage my mind was a blank canvas, so nothing came to mind today, but not to worry i've still got time.

We were meant to have our final briefing today at 2.oopm at the National Gallery. Unfortunately we were told by Steve that the briefing has been cancelled and that it has been posponed till next Monday. The only problem was that i couldn't make monday because i had a live performance gig on MTV Base, i know what you thinking some have it so good, living the life of a superstar...on the contrary while i was on at the MTV Studios i did some sketch illustrations on special request by the TV crew thanks to my pro-active manager. Thats enough of me blabberring off about my extra curricular shenigans, back to animation world, being faced with this dillemma i explained to Steve my Tutor at Uni and he excused me for Monday, told me i will have to reschedule with the gallery on another day of our mutual conveinience. However rather than going back to the studio or home i choose to stay back and browse paintakingly through the online database of paintings available, finally i was able to narrow my choice to 21 paintings which struck a chord with me, writing down it 's ref number . one of the painting which really caught my eye was titled 'Snake, Crane & Python' according to the gallery this was a mosaic painting, an immitation imitation of an ancient Roman work. Italian Roman to be precise, probably 18th century.
